Learn How to Tattoo-Part Two

The second thing you should know when you learn how to tattoo is how the tattoo machine works and how to use it. Remember this is where the entire process will begin. As the ink flows through the machine the designs in your mind or on your template will begin to take form.

It is important to keep in mind that while the tattoo machine is an important part of the process it is the tattoo artist who creates the work of art, not the machine. The machine will never be able to take the place of the time, patience and skills required of the artist. Without a thorough understanding of the machine and how to use it; however, you won’t be able to live up to your full potential.

While there are many different types of tattoo machines on the market and many of them look quite different, they all basically work by driving a needle in an up and down motion. This opens just the first layers of skin so the ink can flow into the skin. This is important to note because you do not want to open more than the first layers of skin. It will be your job as a tattoo artist to maneuver the machine to form the outline of the complete tattoo. Without proper knowledge of how to hold the machine correctly the designs will not be able to come to life properly.

When choosing your tattoo machine make sure you choose a model you are comfortable holding. There are various sizes of tattoo machines available. Select one that you’re comfortable with. This will make a difference in how well you are able to hold and guide the machine.

Be aware also that it may take some time to build up the endurance and stamina necessary to hold the machine for long periods of time. This is where lots of practice can really come in handy. You will also need to learn how to rest your palm accordingly on the skin to keep it pulled taught. This will be important in not only guiding the machine but also keeping the skin tight. It is imperative for the skin to be tight when creating the tattoo. If the skin is too loose, the quality of the tattoo will suffer. Keep these guidelines in mind when you learn to tattoo for better results.

Take the time necessary to practice holding the machine at the proper angle. If you hold the machine too far upright or at too much of angle you won’t be able to create the right lines. Keep in mind that while this will require practice, that practice will pay off in the end. In addition, there are some exercises which you can do to increase the strength and stamina of your hands and the muscles in your arms to make the process easier.

By observing these tips when you learn how to tattoo you will be sure to get started on the right foot and be ready to proceed to the next step in the process.
