Before beginning to prepare the client you will need to take the proper steps to prepare yourself. First, it is important to understand you must keep yourself clean on top of following certain basic sanitizing step. For example, you will need to either keep your hair pulled back or keep it cut. This is to prevent it from contaminating the sterile environment you will create. In addition, you should keep your nails clipped short and keep them clean. The first step in preparing yourself is to wash your hands thorough. To do this you should use hospital grade soap along with a brush. Scrub from your fingertips all the way up to your elbows. Be sure to focus on your nails because bacteria can hide out here. After you are done rinse your hands and then dry them thoroughly, following up with gloves.

It is also important to make sure your work area is as clean as possible when you are tattooing someone. Make sure no one else has access to this area. Avoid the temptation to allow others to be close by for the purpose of watching. They could easily contaminate the area. After both you and your work area are clean and ready you can then prepare the person about to be tattooed.

Begin by wiping down the area where the tattoo is to be applied. Use hospital grade soap and a sterile pad to do this. Be sure you work from the middle to the outer edges. You will also need to remove any hair from the area. You can do this using a straight edge razor or a disposable razor. Before the process is complete you will need to follow up with an alcohol solution and then a Betadine solution to be sure the area is completely sanitized. The final step in this learn to tattoo process is covering the area with a sterile pad until you are ready to work.
